School-Connect recommends the following self-report options for assessing School-Connect program objectives:

The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is a comprehensive and customizable youth self-report data-collection system that provides essential and reliable health risk assessment and resilience information to schools, districts, and communities. The CHKS scales include:

  • School Environment (Module A, Items A1-A24 are S-C-recommended)
    • Caring relationships
    • High expectations
    • Meaningful participation
  • Community Environment
    • Caring relationships
    • High expectations
    • Meaningful participation
  • Alcohol and Other Drug Use
  • Tobacco Use
  • Violence & Safety
  • Physical & Mental Health
  • Resilience & Youth Development (Module B is S-C-recommended)

While all CHKS scales may be relevant to your school data collection, School-Connect recommends two scales in particular for measuring School-Connect constructs: School Environment (Module A, Items A1–A24) and Resilience & Youth Development (Module B). WestEd also offers The California School Climate Survey for staff. Please see www.wested.org/chks for more information, fees, and sample reports.

The Comprehensive School Climate Inventory (CSCI) is an empirically validated school climate tool for students, educators, and parents. The CSCI is used nationwide and consists of 12 scales:

  • Safety rules and norms
  • Sense of physical security
  • Sense of social-emotional security
  • Support for learning
  • Social and civic learning
  • Respect for diversity
  • Social support from adults
  • Social support from students
  • School connectedness/engagement
  • Physical surroundings
  • Leadership (for staff only)
  • Professional relationships (for staff only)

The Center for Social and Emotional Education offers a full data-analysis service with survey use. Please see www.schoolclimate.org for more information, fees, and sample reports. This survey is designed to measure school-wide climate and change. Some items may not be applicable for assessing School-Connect if only a limited percent of the school (e.g., freshman or other groups) is participating in the School-Connect program.

The School-Connect Survey is currently being pilot-tested in schools and is not available yet for public distribution. The School-Connect Survey measures the major constructs of School-Connect:

  • School climate
  • Adult support
  • Self-awareness
  • Emotional management
  • Relationship skills
  • Appreciating diversity
  • Bullying
  • Problem solving
  • Sense of purpose and future
  • Academic motivation

If you would like to participate in the pilot study, please contact Julea Douglass at jdouglass@school-connect.net.

“We assume, as adults, as educators, that our
students came into our classroom with these
social and emotional skills. Making that
assumption causes us to move them along
without acknowledging that we have a
responsibility to teach them these skills.”

— Teacher, Port Jefferson High School, NY
